Joel Cowley, Chief Executive Officer

Joel Cowley is CEO of Calgary Stampede, one of Canada’s most recognized community and cultural organizations. Since joining the organization in 2021, he has led the Stampede through significant growth and transformation, advancing its long-term vision as a year-round gathering place that celebrates Western heritage, community spirit and innovation. He provides leadership to thousands of employees and volunteers who deliver one of North America’s most iconic events and community platforms.

With extensive executive leadership experience spanning the business, agriculture and community sectors, Joel brings a strong track record in strategic planning, stakeholder engagement and organizational leadership. He is widely respected for building collaborative relationships and for representing the Stampede throughout Calgary, across Alberta and in surrounding rural communities through year-round events and initiatives.

During his tenure in Calgary, Joel has worked closely with civic, community and industry partners to advance key city-building initiatives, including ongoing Master Plan developments that continue to enhance Stampede Park as a premier destination for business, entertainment and community gathering. He has also helped champion the organization’s agriculture strategy, focused on bridging the gap between urban consumers and rural producers while positioning Stampede Park as a year-round hub for agricultural innovation, education and trade.

In recognition of his leadership and relationship-building with Indigenous communities, Joel was honoured in 2022 with the Blackfoot name Horse Chief by an Elder of the Blackfoot Nation.

Prior to joining the Calgary Stampede, Joel served as President and CEO of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where he helped lead one of the world’s largest livestock exhibitions and rodeo events. His earlier career included senior leadership roles in the agriculture and beef cattle genetics sectors, as well as academic positions focused on animal science and industry development. He holds an M.B.A. from Michigan State University, an M.Sc. in Animal Science from Texas A&M University, and a B.Sc. in Animal Science from Colorado State University.
